Planet Innovation and Dermapenworld are celebrating more than 50,000 Dermapen micro-needling instruments produced at PI’s manufacturing facility and shipped for distribution to more than 80 countries worldwide.
The successful manufacturing partnership started in 2018, when Dermapenworld appointed PI to manufacture their flagship Dermapen 4, moving away from a previous manufacturing partner in a low-cost region.
PI has since begun manufacturing several new model variants of the original Dermapen 4 and completed a redesign for the new Dermapen HOME, which is also manufactured by PI.
The Dermapen 4 is a micro-needling instrument which sets a new global standard in dermatology, providing treatment for numerous skin conditions including fine lines, pigmentation, acne, enlarged pores and scarring.
Developed for use by medical professionals, the Dermapen 4 works by creating fine, vertical fractional channels, up to 104 percent faster than other micro-needling pens. The micro-injuries trigger a natural process of repair, increasing the production of collagen and elastin and visibly improving a wide range of skin concerns.
PI has now manufactured more than 50,000 pens at our ISO 13485 registered manufacturing facility, including a number of variations to meet the user, regulatory and branding needs of specific countries.
This includes Dermapen PRO variants that are targeted at cosmetic clinics and have a lower needle depth than the medical-grade Dermapen 4.
Following the success of the Dermapen 4 range of pens, Dermapenworld saw an opportunity to create a device for home use between visits to the clinic.
This was more than just a new variant of the Dermapen 4 pen – it required a complete redesign of the Dermapen 4 and PI was appointed as the development partner.
Having our manufacturing and design teams collaborating under one roof allowed us to draw on manufacturing insights, as well as our engineering and industrial design expertise to create the Dermapen HOME.
The Dermapen HOME has a new chassis, new over-moulded buttons, slightly different mechanics, an updated aesthetic and usability changes for self-use. These changes, along with materials cost reductions and manufacturability improvements, enabled a significant reduction in the transfer price to make it suitable for the price-sensitive consumer market.
Dermapenworld CEO Stene Marshall said he appreciated the support PI provided throughout the manufacturing and development process.
“Planet Innovation has been a trusted partner to Dermapenworld. The manufacturing team is very responsive, quickly addressing any supply chain or quality issues and providing regulatory support and documentation to allow us to expand into different countries,” Mr Marshall said.
“Having PI’s design team working so closely with manufacturing has also proven very beneficial, not just through the development of the Dermapen HOME, but also because the design engineers are available to help out with any issues that arise.”
PI’s Manufacturing Strategy Lead Sam Harris said: “We’re delighted by Dermapenworld’s commercial success with the Dermapen 4 and HOME pens. They are great products, which have been embraced by dermatologists, beauticians and home users around the world. It’s fantastic to be celebrating this manufacturing milestone with the Dermapenworld team and we look forward to continuing this partnership in the future.”

At PI, we use a feedback loop – using the market-informed insights gained from manufacturing to then inform the design of an improved product, an adjacent complementary product or even an innovative, second-generation product.
Planet Innovation’s design team won two awards at the 60th Annual Good Design Awards for their work with Cycliq on its Fly CE products and with Dermapenworld on the Dermapen 4 medical product.
Manufacturers are rarely seen as a source of product innovation. Their role is often more narrowly defined to just ‘manufacturing products’ as required. But what if your medtech manufacturer used the deep customer insights they gather to help you drive product improvements and explore new product opportunities, all while still manufacturing products in a very […]
