Planet Innovation’s design team won two awards at the 60th Annual Good Design Awards for their work with Cycliq on its Fly CE products and with Dermapenworld on the Dermapen 4 medical product.

Cycliq’s revolutionary Fly6 CE and Fly12 CE integrated bike camera and light products, which Planet Innovation helped design, were a Good Design Award Gold Winner in the category of ‘Product Design – Consumer Electronics’.

The Fly CE range, which is a redesign of the Fly products, offers enhanced user-experience with ‘Incident Protection’ recording, ‘Home Safe’ power management, and wireless connectivity with bike computers and smartphone apps.

The devices are new to market and have already demonstrated significant popularity amongst Cycliq’s customers with their smaller and more compact design.

Cycliq Executive Chairman Chris Singleton said: “Our team is thrilled to win gold at the 2018 Good Design Awards. Cyclists are really into design and the Fly CE range is a significant step forward, combining form and function to put the user experience front and center.

“This award is a recognition of our continued commitment to delivering outstanding products to our customers and the dedication and hard work of the Cycliq and Planet Innovation teams.

“Planet Innovation has been an integral part of revolutionizing the form factor for the Fly Connected Edition range and continue to ensure our products look as good as they perform.”

Planet Innovation Principal Industrial Designer Ben Druce said the Planet Innovation design team relished the opportunity to work with Cycliq to define their product aesthetic.

“PI has a large, talented team of industrial designers who worked closely with the Cycliq team. We focussed heavily on delivering the ultimate user experience while making smart commercial decisions to maximise the market success of the product,” he said.

Planet Innovation’s industrial design team works closely with the larger PI product development team that comprises more than 160 professionals from all disciplines, ensuring that products don’t just look amazing but are designed around true customer needs and are ready for manufacture.

The PI team was also acknowledged as a Good Design Award Winner in the ‘Product Design – Medical and Scientific’ category, for the Dermapen 4, which was co-designed with Cobalt Design for Dermapenworld.

The Dermapen 4 is a micro-needling instrument which sets a new global standard in dermatology, providing treatment for numerous skin conditions.

The Awards, held at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday 17 May, celebrate excellence in design and innovation across a spectrum of disciplines including product design, engineering and architecture. They attracted record entries of 536 innovative designs with 269 projects receiving the coveted Good Design Award.

Good Design Australia CEO Dr Brandon Gien applauded the high standard of submissions this year, noting that the Awards attracted entries from across Australia and around the world.

“The Australian Good Design Awards has one of the most diverse design categories in the world and the winners this year are an amazing representation of the value of professional design and the potential it has to make a positive impact on our quality of life,” he said.

Winners of the 2018 Good Design Awards and a retrospective selection of winning projects from the last 60 years were on view to the public at the Good Design Showcase as part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

Design is more than skin deep

What makes a product great? Iconic? Whatever the quality, the decision is made, neither by the team that created it nor the marketer who sold it, but by the people who use  it. So that is where we start when we design a new product – with people. And that design must be more than skin deep.
