ASP Health and Planet Innovation have received a prestigious Good Design Award in the ‘Product Design – Medical and Scientific’ category this year for ASP Health’s innovative sample preparation instrument which enhances cancer diagnostics through more consistent, high quality patient samples.
The Australian Good Design Awards, now in their 65th year, is an international design awards program recognizing and celebrating the very best in design and innovation. More than 70 Australian and international Jurors, including designers, engineers, architects and thought leaders conducted the evaluation of over 900 submissions. The entries were assessed accordingly to a strict set of design evaluation criteria which includes Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.
Planet Innovation is the development and manufacturing partner for ASP Health’s Automated Sample Preparation System which enables rapid, on-site, consistent, and high-quality preparation of two slides for immediate and secondary analysis designed to enhance cancer diagnosis. The ASP device is the first and only instrument that automates and standardizes manual slide preparation following fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.
The Good Design Awards Jury commented: “ASP Health demonstrates the importance of attention to detail. The designers successfully overcame difficult design challenges to deliver an enhanced UX that brings the diagnosis closer to the patient and challenges the norm of a conventional medical environment. The ASP Health has the potential to significantly increase hospital efficiency and will ultimately make early cancer diagnosis more achievable.”
During market research conducted while developing the ASP device, pulmonologists said they felt they “failed the patient” when they were forced to repeat an FNA as it keeps them “in limbo” ahead of diagnoses.
The device allows health professionals to implement the rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) process affordably and efficiently in their operating rooms, reducing repeat biopsy rates by up to 70% that can lead to improved cancer survival rates through enhanced diagnosis.
“We are honored to see ASP Health’s instrument recognized at the Good Design Awards, and to share this accolade with Planet Innovation,” said ASP Health CEO John Hart.
“Our mission is to enhance cancer survival rates by advancing the diagnostic process. This platform will lead to improved patient outcomes as it enables all facilities that offer FNA procedures to efficiently perform ROSE and provide enriched patient samples for further cancer diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation.”
“The journey to bring this innovative technology to market has taken several years and Planet Innovation has proven to be an excellent partner every step of the way.”
Bec Bartel, Global Head of Projects at Planet Innovation, remarked, “It’s been fantastic to see the product evolve over the years, we’ve been able to incorporate so much feedback from the market by working so closely with ASP and we are really proud to see the product recognized in this way.”
The awards were held at the Olympic Boulevard in Melbourne on Friday 8th September 2023. The Australian and international design community came together with over 1,000 guests attending on the special night.
