TOMI Environmental Solutions, a global company specializing in decontamination and disinfection, has selected Planet Innovation to manufacture its SteraMist® range of products used worldwide for infectious disease control, including to help fight the spread of COVID-19.

SteraMist® uses TOMI’s Binary Ionization Technology (BIT) solution to create a hydrogen peroxide-based mist and fog that kills bacteria and fungal spores and deactivates viral cells.

While not designed specifically for COVID-19, the product has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It is currently being used around the world to decontaminate spaces such as hospitals and clinics, as well as disinfecting N95 masks and other PPE (personal protective equipment) to allow safe reuse.

PI is manufacturing TOMI’s two SteraMist products:

  • SteraMist Surface Unit: a portable, hand-held, point and spray misting disinfection unit.
  • SteraMist Environment System: an automated/remote controlled complete room fogging decontamination system.

The products were developed in the U.S., where they are currently manufactured. Increased demand worldwide prompted TOMI to engage PI because it wanted a second manufacturer outside of the U.S. to increase production and boost its global supply chain resilience.

Dr. Halden Shane, CEO of TOMI, said: “As we continue forward during these difficult times and as our customers and service providers grow, we are committed to keeping pace with increased demand across the board. Ensuring that those on the frontlines of the fight against the SARS CoV-2 virus worldwide are well-equipped with our technology and solution remains our number one priority.”

He added: “Working with Planet Innovation has allowed us to quickly expand our production so we can ensure we can always get our products to those who need them.”

Stuart Elliott, co-CEO and co-founder of Planet Innovation, said TOMI was a great example of a manufacturer proactively looking to protect its supply chain by dual sourcing.

“The COVID pandemic has really shone a light on a lot of manufacturers’ reliance on a single supplier or country. This is something TOMI recognized, and we’re delighted they selected Planet Innovation to be their global manufacturing partner,” Stuart said.

“With SteraMist products currently in huge demand, our manufacturing team worked closely with TOMI to get the products into production in record time, shipping our first units two months after our first discussions.”
